Tomas
Berdych has never made it past the fourth round here and he went
out in the first round last year. And he just missed five weeks due to injury.
This year
it's a 1st round match against Robert Smeets, he beat this player at Sydney
tournament in 2007.
Tomas Berdych lost just one game against Robert
Smeets.
No. 11 seed Tomas
Berdych was in fine form as he enjoyed safe passage through to
the second round, committing just eight unforced errors and
breaking serve eight times as he dropped just one game in defeating Australian
Robert Smeets 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
After suffering an ankle injury against Nikolay
Davydenko in the Czech Republic's Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinal tie against
Russia, the 22-year-old Berdych had
won just two matches in three events on clay prior to arriving in Paris, both at
last week's World Team Cup in Dusseldorf. Having twice fallen first round in
Roland Garros, including last year (l. to Garcia-Lopez), his best result came in
2006 when he reached the fourth round (l. to Federer).
BREEZE FOR
BERDYCH / Berdych - utterly
dominant.
Tomas
Berdych lost just one game in his opening encounter at the
French Open on Monday, crushing Robert Smeets.
The 11th seed was in ruthless mood against the
hopelessly-outclassed Australian and sauntered to a 6-1 6-0 6-0
victory.
Smeets won just 27 points in the entire match and
could not force a single break point on the Berdych serve.
It took the Czech just 67 minutes to wrap up victory
- and that will surely go down as the fastest completed match at this year's
tournament.
Berdych
will face a Frenchman Michael Llodra in round two when he will surely be given a
sterner test

Llodra puts out 11th seed
Berdych
PARIS, May 28 (Reuters) - Tomas Berdych became the highest men's
seed to exit the French Open when he was beaten 6-3 4-6 5-7 6-3 6-4 by local
favourite Michael Llodra on Wednesday.
The Czech 11th seed overcame a slow start to
gain the upper hand going into the fourth set. From then on though he started to
miscue his shots in a scrappy encounter on court two.
Berdych won 143 points against 134 bagged by the
error-prone Llodra but that was still not enough to take him
through.
Roared on by a vocal crowd, Llodra booked his
place in round three with a service winner and next plays Italy's Simone
Bolelli.
Berdych crashes out of
Open
Unseeded Frenchman Michael
Llodra snapped a two-match losing streak against World No. 13 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, the No. 11
seed, with a 6-3, 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win in two hours and six minutes. Llodra
hit 10 aces and 36 winners in total and will next meet Munich finalist Simone
Bolelli, who saved 12 break points to defeat Juan Martin del Potro 3-6, 7-6(0),
7-5, 6-2. World No. 41 Llodra has captured two ATP titles this year at Adelaide
(d. Nieminen) and Rotterdam (d. Soderling).

BERDYCH SENT
PACKING
Tomas
Berdych crashed out in the second round of the French Open as
home favourite Michael Llodra claimed a 6-3 4-6 5-7 6-3 6-4 victory.
The 11th seed from the Czech Republic fought
back from losing the opener to silence the passionate crowd and force his way
into a 2-1 set lead in what was fast becoming a thrilling encounter.
But Llodra, whose best performance here was a
run to the fourth round in 2004, found the strength needed to break once in a
tight fourth set to force a decider.
And once again just the one break of serve was
needed for the 28-year-old to send Berdych
packing and give the home fans another reason to cheer.

Resumé
Tomas
Berdych, the world's No. 11 player, returned to the ATP
tournament circuit after a month of recovering from an ankle injury. He swept
away Australia's Robert Smeets in the first round, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. But in the
following round he fell short in a five-set battle against French player Mickael
Llodra. Berdych wasted four break
points in the final set and later lamented the hostile atmosphere in the stands.
"I knew that the fans would support the home player," he said. "However, as our
match was entering the decisive stage, the crowd was becoming hostile and almost
blamed me for winning points."
