Championships March 4, 2008.
Tomas
Berdych of the Czech Republic was quite comfortable during his
straight set run past upcoming French youngster Gael Monfils. Monfils,
who was making his first appearance on the circuit after a serious knee
operation in September 2007 was pleased with the
result. "My first match and the result was good though I did not get the points I needed badly in the first set. I have to get back to my usual game and will have to go slowly first, following my coach's advice and rehabilitation programme," said Monfils. "The conditions in Dubai are near perfect with no wind so far but
the heat and the fast surface may be more difficult to handle as the days go
by," Berdych
said. "It is difficult to get used to the conditions quickly when one comes straight from the European legs."

Earlier Gael Monfils, the former triple Grand Slam champion at
junior level, made his comeback after five months out with a knee injury.
Although Monfils was well beaten by the impressively in-form Tomas Berdych, his 6-3, 6-2 defeat was a
sufficiently trouble-free workout to raise his morale about the future.
