Tomas Berdych advances to second round at Dubai Championships

Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic was quite comfortable during his straight set run past upcoming French youngster Gael Monfils.

Monfils, who was making his first appearance on the circuit after a serious knee operation in September 2007 was pleased with the result.

"My first match and the result was good though I did not get the points I needed badly in the first set. I have to get back to my usual game and will have to go slowly first, following my coach's advice and rehabilitation programme," said Monfils.

"The conditions in Dubai are near perfect with no wind so far but the heat and the fast surface may be more difficult to handle as the days go by," Berdych said.

"It is difficult to get used to the conditions quickly when one comes straight from the European legs."

Berdych beats Monfils in first round of Dubai Championships

Earlier Gael Monfils, the former triple Grand Slam champion at junior level, made his comeback after five months out with a knee injury. Although Monfils was well beaten by the impressively in-form Tomas Berdych, his 6-3, 6-2 defeat was a sufficiently trouble-free workout to raise his morale about the future.

"My goal is still to be world number one," the 21-year-old Frenchman said. "It's great to be back competing. I just have to keep working hard now and be patient."

Berdych was in great serving form, which acted as a thermometer for the rest of his game, which got hotter as the match went on. The eighth-seeded Czech is in the same half in which Roger Federer, the world number one, who was yesterday knocked out in the first round by Andy Murray, but Berdych preferred not to discuss the potential advantage which this might offer.

"I saw the match and Andy played unbelievable tennis and deserved to win, but I have to win two matches before I could play him so it's too far away to think about yet." Berdych said.

Eighth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych was dismissed 6-2, 7-5 by Spanish left-hander Feliciano Lopez.

Berdych came back from 2-5 to 5-5 in the second set as he strove to avoid a one-sided defeat but found Lopez, who delivered ten aces, in good form and keen for a quarter-final with his compatriot David Ferrer, the world number four. (F. Lopez def. D. Ferrer March 6 and reached SF).
