Ljubicic was unable to match the brute force unleashed by Tomas Berdych, the number 5 seed. The Czech next meets Ivo Karlovic, another Croatian service specialist.

Croatian Ivo Karlovic sent another seed out when he hit 17 aces on his way to defeating fifth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4. He now improves to 5-3 on the season and inches ahead in their head-to-head standings (2-1). Karlovic who is making his debut in Rotterdam, led the ATP circuit in four service categories last season, including aces (1,318). World No. 12 Berdych, who reached the quarterfinals in Sydney (l. to Guccione) and lost to No. 1 Roger Federer in the fourth round at the Australian Open, slips to 7-3 for the season.
21-02-2008 Ivo Karlovic launched no less than seventeen aces past Tomas Berdych this afternoon. The Czech, who is seeded 5th, was simply unable to withstand the service onslaught of his Croatian opponent. Berdych is the seventh seeded player to be knocked out during the opening rounds of the tournament. The crowd looked on in amazement as Karlovic and Berdych launched a barrage of missile-like serves at each other. Although Berdych comfortably beat twofold finalist Ivan Ljubicic in the first round, he was unable to gain the upper hand against Karlovic. Unlike his opponent, who secured no less than eleven breakpoints, Berdych was unable to force a single breakpoint.
Second seed Nikolay Davydenko, third seed David Ferrer and fifth seed Tomas Berdych were all upset on Thursday in straight sets by their opponents in the second round of the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. World No. 4 Davydenko of Russia went down 3-6, 5-7 to Frenchman Michael Llodra, ranked No. 58 in the world. World No. 5 Spaniard Ferrer were beaten by German qualifier Mischa Zverev, the world No. 98, in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. This was the first ever win for the 20-year-old Zverev over a top 10 player in his career. Meanwhile, World No. 12 Berdych of the Czech Republic were easily defeated by Croatian Ivo Karlovic, the world No. 24, who won 6-4, 6-4. So far, seven of the eight seeds of the 824,000-euro hard court event have been ousted. The only seed left, world No. 2 and top-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain will take on World No. 42 Italian Andreas Seppi later on Thursday. he Rotterdam event has a particularly strong field this year, drawing five of the world's top 10 and nine of the world's top 20 players.
... as unseeded Italian Andreas Seppi stunned the World No. 2 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Seppi, who saved one match point as he defeated Lleyton Hewitt in the first round yesterday, hit eight aces and converted four of eight break points to close out his first victory over the Spaniard in three attempts after two hours and 14 minutes. Seppi, who lives in Caldaro, Italy, celebrates his 24th birthday today. "I couldn't think of a better birthday present," he explained afterwards, smiling from ear to ear. "It was one of my best matches ever, not least because I served well." Going into the tournament, Seppi could never have imagined that he would beat Lleyton Hewitt and Rafael Nadal in the same week "I had already booked my return flight for Wednesday evening, but had to change it."

Australian Open champions Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram extended their winning streak to nine matches by defeating Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 in Rotterdam Friday. Erlich and Ram have now reached the semifinals or better in three of the four tournaments they have played in 2008. They next face Tomas Berdych and Dmitry Tursunov (pictured), who defeated Robin Haase and Peter Wessels 6-1, 6-4.

Philipp Kohlschreiber/Mikhail Youzhny (GER/RUS) vs Tomas Berdych/Dmitry Tursunov (CZE/RUS) Philipp Kohlshcreiber and Mikhail Youzhny advanced to the final at ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament by defeating No. 2 seeds and reigning US Open champions Simon Aspelin and Julian Knowle 7-6(5), 7-5 on Saturday in Rotterdam. They will face the new team of Tomas Berdych and Dmitry Tursunov in the final after the Czech-Russian duo edged out reigning Australian Open champions Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7. Erlich and Ram had come into the semifinal match riding a nine match winning streak. Kohlschreiber and Youzhny won the Munich title last year in their only other appearance as a duo. Kohlschreiber has a 4-0 record in ATP doubles finals, most recently winning in January at Doha with Czech David Skoch. Youzhny has a 3-2 record with his last title win coming at Munich. Berdych will be appearing in his first career ATP doubles final, and Tursunov his fifth. Tursunov won his sole doubles title last year in Moscow with Marat Safin.
Rookie pairing Czech Tomas Berdych and Russian Dmitry Tursunov claimed their first ATP doubles title together on Sunday with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 victory over Russian Mikhail Youzhny and German Philipp Kohlschreiber in a final that featured four standout singles players at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. Both teams broke serve once, and Youzhny/Kohlschreiber actually won more points (65-62) than their opponents, but it was Berdych and Tursunov who were able to claim the victory in 1hr., 21mins. Berdych, ranked No. 12 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, was contesting his first career ATP doubles final. World No. 33 Tursunov was appearing in his fifth (2-3), with his first title coming last year in Moscow (w/Safin). "I'm pretty happy about my first doubles victory," said Berdych. With all the finalists ranked inside the Top 35 of the South African Airways ATP Rankings, Berdych commented: "If you look at the singles final there was Michael Llodra who I actually see more as a doubles player. I think it's good, people can see how equal the level in tennis is. "Everybody can be in the final, everybody can win the tournament. It's really nice because with the new rules everybody was expecting more singles players in the doubles draw. It's nice not to see the same people in the final every week."

Mon, 25 Feb 2008 Hamburg - Roger Federer was the familiar number one while Tomas Berdych returned into the top 10 of the latest men's tennis rankings issued on Monday by the ATP. Federer has 6,630 points as the Swiss ranks ahead of Spain's Rafael Nadal (5,980) and Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia (5,070).
